Welcome to Surf City Chiropractic!

We have new and exciting news at Surf City Chiropractic.  As many of you may know by now we have dedicated a full day to the Santa Cruz Women's Health Center.  Dr. Smith will be working there a full day and will not have office hours at Surf City Chiropractic on Wednesdays.  This is an exciting opportunity to serve more people with chiropractic care at the community multidisciplinary clinic, allowing access to chiropractic care to people who might otherwise not have that option.

We are going to start another venture starting April 1st.  Dr. Smith will be teaming with Dr. Goldie Jacques-Maynes at Golden Chiropractic in Aptos.  He will have the same Tuesday office hours, 8A- 4P at 9053 Soquel Drive, Suite A on the frontage road in Aptos. We will have our office in Santa Cruz open from 2-6pm with Dr. Dowling continuing to serve our patient's needs.  You will still be able to access Dr. Smith or Dr. Dowling using our same 426-6450 phone number and through our website email.

Located in the heart of Santa Cruz, the leading health professionals at Surf City Chiropractic are dedicated to helping you achieve your wellness objectives -- combining skill and expertise that spans the entire chiropractic treatment spectrum. Dr. Thomas Smith and Dr. Meghan Dowling are committed to bringing you better health and a better way of life by teaching and practicing the true principles of chiropractic active care.

Dr. Smith is the only chiropractor in Santa Cruz County to have earned the advanced chiropractic degree of Diplomate of the American Chiropractic Rehabilitation Board (DACRB).  With the rehabilitation approach, rather than focusing merely on pathology and symptoms the emphasis is on recovery and reactivation to regular activity.  Using a functional approach the doctor looks to how the system works.  Quality of movement, habits, condition of the tissues, and psycho-social issues are all factored. Treatment with a rehabiliation doctor is progressive.  What this means is that treatment changes as the patient improves.  Treatment is based on the phase of care:  Acute, Sub-acute and Chronic.  As the patient improves, their treatment changes accordingly.  Active care, self care, is especially encouraged in our patients.

Treatment is also based on the needs and goals of the patient.  A fifty five year old sedentary office worker will not have the same rehabilitation treatment plan as a 25 year old delivery person whose job requires lifting 100 lb boxes off the floor.  The patient's end goal of treatment is based on the demands of their daily activities and the patient's goals (to play 18 holes of golf, lift a 30 lb grandchild or take a kickboxing class).

At Surf City Chiropractic we take a patient-centered reactivation approach, focusing on the patient's dysfunction and distress rather than the pain or pathology. Our more modern report of findings reassures patients that they do not have a disease (tumor, infection, and fracture) and that staying active will actually speed recovery.  Learning that pain does not always warn of impending harm or damage can empower patients to remain active, avoid disability, and prevent the transition from acute to chronic pain.

In addition to the rehabilitation background, Dr. Smith is one of only two chiorpractors in Santa Cruz County (2008) to be certified within the chiropractic profession to treat sports injuries.  Although we don't only treat athletes, we do take an athletic appoach towards injuries.  We always want our patients to return to their game, whatever that may be for them.  We do not take the approach, if it hurts don't do it.  We try to find out how to do it without dysfunction.

Patients seeking treatment at Surf City Chiropractic with our doctors are assured of receiving only the finest quality care through the use of modern chiropractic equipment and technology. Dr. Thomas Smith and Dr. Dowling, as well as the staff have a genuine concern for your well-being!
